Central to J Swap Contractors Ltd’s business are the quarries which it owns and manages in the Bay of Plenty, Waikato and King Country.

These extraction, crushing and screening operations – and the maintenance of stockpiles - ensure a continuous supply of a variety of aggregates for J Swap’s own activities as well as providing aggregates for local clients.

The finished products from each quarry range from 7mm basecourse for road construction to large protection rock. In addition, certain of J Swap’s quarries provide specialist products, including sealing chip, graded concrete aggregates and filter and drainage materials.

In addition J Swap has two specialist aggregate operations. Sulphur Point Sand Supplies reclaims marine sand dredged from Tauranga harbour. Approximately 25,000 cubic metres of sand are processed annually.

Whakatane River Gravel selectively removes river gravel from the Whakatane riverbed. After washing 20 grades of high quality gravel are stockpiled for use in landscaping.

J Swap’s quarries now produce well over a million tonnes of aggregate a year. An operation that size requires a well managed structure which brings together many factors. These include ongoing compliance issues – often involving resource management legislation – careful planning and operational expertise. The latter includes the ability of the J Swap transport fleet to deliver large quantities to any site with any agreed time frame.

Quarries have the potential for large environmental impact – quarrying is an intermediate land use and quarried-out land must be returned to agriculture or other land uses. Environmental considerations play a vital role in the management plans of all J Swap’s quarries, and this includes liaison with local communities.
